Balsamic Strawberry Ice Cream

This dessert is a new favorite and a combination of two of my latest obsessions: strawberries and ice cream.

Balsamic Strawberry Ice Cream

This ice cream was a delightful indulgence. The texture was thick, soft, and creamy, the ice cream a light pink, studded with bright red wedges of strawberry, flecked with dots of vanilla, and the taste: oh the taste! Just like it appears, the ice cream was rich and creamy with a full, fresh strawberry flavor throughout and the sweet, soft element you get from fresh vanilla. All things combined, this dessert was really amazing and my wife’s new favorite when it comes to ice cream (even supplanting floral mango, the one which she previously declared the best ice cream ever)! The flavor was further complicated by the presence of a small amount of balsamic syrup, which is one of those strange sounding… click to read more…

Strawberry White Chocolate Mousse

Mousse is a delightful dessert: rich, creamy, light, and fluffy–some times chocolatey, some times fruity, but always delicious. As a part of my strawberry lust, I decided to have some of the best of both worlds with a strawberry white chocolate mousse.

Strawberry White Chocolate Mousse

As I have mentioned in previous posts, strawberries are at their peak in my neck of the woods–they taste great and are stunningly cheap, so being a frugal man, I bought several pounds of strawberries without any forethought. The solution? Make lots of dessert!

I’d been meaning to make a chocolate mousse for some time, but that idea always got swept aside when something better came along. However, this just seemed like a perfect combination, so finally, mousse got to have its day! I adapted this recipe from a chocolate mousse recipe in The Williams-Sonoma Collection: Dessert and the result was fantastic–a very light dessert that has you… click to read more…

Strawberry Shortcakes

Strawberries are a really versatile fruit–I mean how many amazing desserts come to mind when you think of strawberries? And out of all of those, I bet the first one that entered your mind was an American classic: strawberry shortcakes.

Strawberry Shortcake

And so it only seems appropriate that this be my first strawberry post (oh there are many more coming! Crepes, while delicious, don’t count as the first! ). I was excited about strawberry season and all of the desserts I could see myself making, but my wife wasn’t too thrilled about it. This was the recipe that got her on board the strawberry train. Macerated, sweet, juicy strawberries are a delightful treat unto themselves, but with a flaky, crisp shortbread scone sandwiching it and sopping up those juices, you have an unstoppable combination. Throw a little home-made whipped cream, er, crème chantilly, in there, and these are just a sensation and my absolute… click to read more…

Nutella Crêpes w/Strawberry & Banana

Crepes were always a rare but special treat for me as a kid. When we’d go on family vacations, there would be a few places that we absolutely had to go to for breakfast so we could have crepes. As simple as they are, something about them is just always a delight, and so for breakfast (or a dessert), today we have nutella and fruit (strawberry and banana) filled crêpes.

Crêpes — nutella & strawberry, nutella & banana

Given how special crepes were to me as a kid, when I was much younger, my brother and I had tried to make crepes for my mother on Mother’s Day (fancy schmancy breakfast in bed–what more could you ask for? 😮 ). Of course, having no real knowledge of cooking and a box of pancake mix did not spell success–along with the fact that we didn’t notice that the box was about two years past expiration. To make a long story short, those crepes were henceforth known as “craps,”… click to read more…

Blueberry (or Cranberry) Muffins w/Hazelnut Streusel

Everybody loves muffins, whether it be the tops, the stumps, or the whole thing, and when I think muffins, I think blueberry muffins. Something about them is just comforting, warm, and inviting at any time of day. Whether it be a not-so-healthy breakfast or a mid-day snack, the fluffy, perfectly spiced muffins, sweet, oozing blueberries, and delicious, sweet and crunchy topping of these blueberry muffins are just there for you whenever you need a little something.

In searching for blueberry muffin recipes for inspiration, none of the batters really appealed to me. I instead decided to approach this like I would a cake, for in my mind, muffins are like cupcakes are like cakes, so there you have it. I thought I could get a fluffier, richer tasting muffin this way, and in the end, my wife and I were thrilled with the results. Its actually a great foundation for a… click to read more…

Strawberry Seduction: a call for posts!

I’ve timidly thought of hosting a food blogging event before, but never quite followed through with it. However, as the saying goes, ’tis the season when a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of…strawberries…and so, it simply was time for me to jump into the food blog event fray.

Fresh strawberries

I live in Florida, and if Florida is known for anything when it comes to food, its the oranges. However, I’m simply not a big fan of oranges–I’ll cook with them, but you won’t see me biting into an orange or drinking a glass of OJ. Sorry orange lovers, but I just don’t get it. But citrus aside, I nonetheless delight in the many other, less “famous” fruits that really shine in this quirky state, and right about now, strawberries are at their prime.

Plant City, the “winter strawberry capital,” is not terribly far from me and the growers are currently flooding the street corners, farmer’s markets, local supermarkets, and… click to read more…
