Blueberry (or Cranberry) Muffins w/Hazelnut Streusel

Everybody loves muffins, whether it be the tops, the stumps, or the whole thing, and when I think muffins, I think blueberry muffins. Something about them is just comforting, warm, and inviting at any time of day. Whether it be a not-so-healthy breakfast or a mid-day snack, the fluffy, perfectly spiced muffins, sweet, oozing blueberries, and delicious, sweet and crunchy topping of these blueberry muffins are just there for you whenever you need a little something.

In searching for blueberry muffin recipes for inspiration, none of the batters really appealed to me. I instead decided to approach this like I would a cake, for in my mind, muffins are like cupcakes are like cakes, so there you have it. I thought I could get a fluffier, richer tasting muffin this way, and in the end, my wife and I were thrilled with the results. Its actually a great foundation for a… click to read more…

Moroccan Beef Stew

After the last Moroccan dish I made, I simply had to have more. The approach to cooking the food is simple, the spices strong and seductive, and the end result is uniquely complex and delicious. Really, my first experience woke me up to a whole new genre of food that I had to explore. Today: a Moroccan Beef Stew.

Moroccan Beef Stew

Combining my new regional food interest with my newfound obsession with braising, this stew just made a lot of sense. Plus, this was an exciting opportunity for me to crack open the jar of preserved lemons that I had started so long ago–finally, after all of the suspense, I could discover what all the fuss was about. And you know what? They really are unlike anything else. Clearly lemons in appearance and flavor,… click to read more…

Lasagna Bolognese

I love pasta, but there’s a special place in my heart for lasagna. This is one of those pasta dishes that takes time and effort, but the end result is amazing and definitely up there among the best of pasta-centric comfort-foods. With a little extra attention paid to the noodles, the sauce, and the cheese, lasagna is a force to be reckoned with.

Lasagna Bolognese

I approached this dish more with the intent of clearing out leftovers. You know, something simple that would come out reasonably well with little effort while freeing up space in the fridge and leaving no waste. But then I thought, well, I’d still like to play with my pasta maker, so maybe I could make my own noodles? And then, well, if I have these nice veal leftovers, I shouldn’t just use some jarred sauce, since that just doesn’t seem right. And how would it look on the web… click to read more…

Strawberry Seduction: a call for posts!

I’ve timidly thought of hosting a food blogging event before, but never quite followed through with it. However, as the saying goes, ’tis the season when a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of…strawberries…and so, it simply was time for me to jump into the food blog event fray.

Fresh strawberries

I live in Florida, and if Florida is known for anything when it comes to food, its the oranges. However, I’m simply not a big fan of oranges–I’ll cook with them, but you won’t see me biting into an orange or drinking a glass of OJ. Sorry orange lovers, but I just don’t get it. But citrus aside, I nonetheless delight in the many other, less “famous” fruits that really shine in this quirky state, and right about now, strawberries are at their prime.

Plant City, the “winter strawberry capital,” is not terribly far from me and the growers are currently flooding the street corners, farmer’s markets, local supermarkets, and… click to read more…

Blueberry Maple Ice Cream w/Brazil Nuts

I decided that I’m going to stop trying to make excuses and witty comments about making ice cream in the winter. My wife and I love ice cream, and I get the impression that I’m going to be doing this quite often. I really enjoy making it, have more flavor ideas than I can expect to actually do during the entire coming year, and its such a fun and easy dessert to make. So what’s new to the Mulligan freezer this week? A delicious maple blueberry ice cream with brazil nuts.

Blueberry Maple Ice Cream w/Brazil Nuts

Ice cream had sort of become a staple in our freezer without any conscious realization of it happening. It just sort of shows up, goes away, and what do you know, there’s some more again. There’s the desserts I make/bake every week and there’s the backup: a carton of ice cream from the grocery store so that if you needed variety in dessert during the week (or ran… click to read more…
